Xavier Dolan appears to have settled his dispute with Netflix UK over the unauthorised changes to the aspect ratios of his award-winning Mommy. This week, the French-Canadian writer/director took to Twitter to publish an open letter, protesting the fact his film is being served to UK customers of the streaming service, in a 1:85 ratio, and not its rightful 1:1.
The movie, about the complex relationship between a mother and her troubled son, famously uses aspect ratio as a dramatic device, with two instances of format change at key moments in the character's emotional development. As discussed in our review of the movie direct from its world premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Fetival, the scene prompted spontaneous applause from those present. Dolan went on to receive that year's festival Jury Prize - an honour he shared with fellow recipient, Jean Luc Godard (for Goodbye To Language).
Dolan's entire complaint appears below:
Netflix UK immediately responded on Twitter, and apologised for its mistake, citing a 'technical issue'.
Dolan then apologised on Twitter for "having misinterpreted the situation".
