A survey of more than one thousand people by the company Essential Research, commissioned by SBS, finds that 59 percent of those surveyed think immigration levels in the last ten years have been too high.
And 57 percent disagreed with Australia increasing refugee intake due to the current migrant crisis in Europe.
There is support, though, for multiculturalism, with more than 60 percent of those asked agreeing migrants have a positive contribution to Australian society and that multiculturalism has enriched Australia.
41 percent say they trust the Liberal party to have the right immigration policies, as opposed to just 28 percent for Labor.
