Australian Alexey Popyrin wins French Open junior

Alexey Popyrin is the first Australian in 49 years to win Roland Garros junior championship.

In the final Alexey won the 11 seed Spaniard Nicola Kuhn 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. Alexey became the first Australian to win French Open junior championship after 1968 when Phil Dent dominated the court. 

Sydneysider Alexey is 17 years old and it is his first win the the tournament of the grand slam. Now, the young champion is focused on Davis Cup. 

"I would love to play in Davis Cup, love to be an orange boy at least maybe this year or maybe next year," he said.

"Yeah, for sure winning Davis Cup for my country is one of the main goals also."

Alexey's parents moved to Australia from Russia in 1998 and he speaks Russian at home but considers himself Australian as he barely supports any contacts with Russia.
