The Australian opener mouthed the comment to India’s Rohit Sharma during the one-day international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during a mid-pitch confrontation on Sunday.
The clash appeared to be sparked by a single run made by the Indian player, taken during an overthrow in the 23rd over.
Warner confronted the Indian batsmen at the end of the over, when he mouthed “speak English” to Sharma.
The confrontation comes a fortnight after Warner called for restraint on sledging, a plea which contrasted with his own history of making provocative comments.
He has previously been fined for comments made to Indian cricketers, which he defended as “banter”.
Warner has since trended on social media, but has stood by his comments.
"When I went over to say something to him, he sort of said something in their language and I said 'speak English' because, if you're going to say something, understand that theoretically I cannot speak Hindi," he told Sky Sports Radio.
"I did the polite thing and asked him to speak English, therefore he did and I can't repeat what he said."
Warner was fined 50 per cent of his match fee over the incident by the International Cricket Council.
