Geelong's James Kelly faces testing time

Geelong's James Kelly is recuperatinng after successful surgery to repair a ruptured testicle suffered during Saturday's win over Richmond at the MCG.

Geelong AFL veteran James Kelly is resting after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured testicle.

Kelly, 31, suffered the injury when he landed heavily on the MCG turf during the third quarter of Saturday's narrow victory over Richmond.

He was immediately substituted out of the match and transported to Epworth Hospital by ambulance where he underwent a corrective procedure on Saturday night.

Geelong football manager Steve Hocking, who suffered a similar injury while playing for the Cats in the 1989 grand final, said that the operation had gone well.

"It was obviously a very painful injury for James and the doctors made the decision to surgically repair the testicle last night," Hocking told the club's website on Sunday.

"All reports from the surgeon was that the operation was successful and now we will continue to monitor James over the coming days."

Hocking did not offer an estimate on how long the three-time-premiership player would be sidelined.

"Right now James' comfort and wellbeing is our sole focus."
