Bendigo mosque protest could turn violent

A group behind an anti-mosque protest in Bendigo say they can't promise the rally will be peaceful as police and local authorities prepare for clashes.

Authorities fear the possibility of violence erupting during a protest against the construction of a controversial mosque in Bendigo.

The United Patriots Front (UPF) are marching to Bendigo town hall on Saturday at 2pm in protest over plans to build a mosque in the regional city.

The group's spokesman, Blair Cottrell, says residents do not want the mosque.

"It's a demonstration of community strength and pride," he told 3AW on Friday.

The group is expecting 100-200 people to attend Saturday's protest and can't guarantee there won't be clashes between UPF supporters and counter protesters, Mr Cottrell says.

"I can't promise you anything," he said.

The City of Greater Bendigo's chief executive says residents have the right to practise their religion.

"We are proudly a multi-faith community," Craig Niemann says.

Victoria Police and the council say public safety will be paramount, with a large police presence expected in the city centre.

Several roads in central Bendigo have been closed since 6pm on Friday, with further blocks planned around Hargreaves Mall on Saturday.

"We ask that rally participants conduct themselves in an honourable and respectful way," Mr Niemann said.

Residents should consider whether they need to be in the city centre, police say.
