Greens leader Richard Di Natale is thinking big - he can see the day when his party will be in power and its leader will be prime minister.

Senator Di Natale says the Greens' membership is surging and support in the electorate is continuing to grow as Australia moves towards an era when there will be three big parties fighting it out for government.

"This change is coming," he told reporters in Adelaide on Saturday after making similar remarks to the Greens' federal conference.
"It won't be too far away when the Australian voters have a chance to vote between parties to decide who becomes the government of this country."

Senator Di Natale told delegates the Greens were increasingly recognised as the party that represented modern, 21st century Australia.

And he said the party had to make some decisions soon on how it would handle a political environment where it was a contender to take office at a federal level.

"Because it won't be too far away when the person who gives this speech is not just the leader of the Greens but the prime minister of the country," he said.

The Greens' leader also offered some commentary on current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who he said was enjoying a long honeymoon since taking over from Tony Abbott.
He said Mr Turnbull would ultimately be judged on whether he could change the direction the government had taken under his predecessor.

"He is enjoying a long honeymoon. Let him enjoy it," Senator Di Natale said.

"But we will have an election next year where he will be judged on whether he delivers in terms of substance and not just style."
