On 23rd March, Shaivite and Vaishnavite sadhus poured cow dung and cow urine over one another amidst religious chanting in Ujjain.
Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad (ABAP) president Mahant Narendra Giri told the Hindustan Times that - “Sadhus have traditionally used cow urine and cow dung in various rituals.”
Mahant Hari Giri of Juna Akhada said sadhus invoke blessings of Lord Ganesha during Kumbh festival by using cow dung and cow urine.
He told the Hindustan Times “According to Hindu tradition, we can’t have idols of deity all the time. So, sometimes people consider cow dung as the representation of Lord Ganesh. That is why we say ‘Gobar Ganesh’.”
According to Mahant Rajendra Das ji from Nirmohi Akhada - “cow urine mixed with cow dung is an ‘aushadhi’ (medicine), a disinfectant and an antiseptic.”
In Indian culture cow urine is considered sacred and cow is known to be adored by Lord Krishna.
