Born in what is now South Sudan, Rebecca Wour has lived an incredible life.
She ran away from home to join the rebel army at 16 years old. Then, widowed by her early twenties and with three children in tow, she moved with her new partner and the whole South Sudanese resistance force to refugee camps in Uganda.
You know, when we're in the refugee camp, you can't camp by yourself. All your neighbours, when they don't have food and you have something, you need to share to survive.
Eventually Rebecca was able to come to Australia but had to leave three of her then six children behind.
Once in Australia, Rebecca had to escape domestic violence while negotiating to have her children remaining in Africa educated and cared for. Ultimately, she was able to bring two of them here.
Now a grandmother, Rebecca is living in Bendigo and enjoys being part of her multicultural community.
When the community gathers together it's really good… We still have our culture here. We dance, we teach the kids. They can't forget the culture.
