The Bikes for Schools program has certainly had a positive impact on the New South Wales small country town of Coonamble, where kids of all cultures have come to learn a variety of new skills.
Coonamble Public School have more than 50 BMX bikes on offer for their students and, as McKenzie and Reid found out, encourage students to learn more than just how to ride them.
“There was a vision here that every child should have access to a bike, and it’s evolved as we’ve gone through (the years),” Coonamble teacher Sandra Gray said.
“We’ve taken that to actually having the bikes here and every child having access to – not only ride them – but maintain a bike and understand road safety.”
Upon riding through Coonamble with McKenzie and Reid, the students described the experience as “fun” and an opportunity to feel free.
And with so many students now able to access the equipment and explore their local surroundings, the program has no doubt served its purpose.
