A woman has been charged over allegedly lighting a bushfire that destroyed several homes near Tabulam in northern New South Wales.

Police say the 40-year-old woman has been accused of lighting rubbish on fire in a steel drum in her backyard on Tuesday morning.

The blaze was allegedly left unattended in the hot weather and amid a total fire ban.

The fire quickly spread to bushland around the property and destroyed almost 3000 hectares of land including five houses.

Fire crews spent Wednesday night battling that blaze along with erratic fires at Wallangarra and Tingha.
