A high-level meeting in Canberra between the Australian Foreign Ministry and a Sudanese delegation has resulted in constructive steps to develop bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in the mining, agriculture and higher education sectors and combating illegal immigration.

The development of relations between Canberra and Khartoum was the focus of the meeting hosted by Australia between Foreign Ministry officials in the two countries earlier this month. Sudanese Deputy Foreign Minister Abdul Ghani Al-Naim told SBS Arabic24 that Australia is in a privileged position to support the development and modernization of various Sudanese sectors, notably investment in mining and infrastructure. The official added that Australia welcomed the the idea of having a diplomatic representation in Sudan and support Khartoum's efforts to join the World Trade Organization

Asked about the role that the Arab and Sudanese Australians can play in supporting the emerging relationship between the two countries, Al-Naim said that the community has a lot to offer from the models of coexistence and development, explaining that the Sudanese embassy in Canberra belongs to all Sudanese regardless of their political and partisan differences
