Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says Australia needs to be able to defend itself without relying on help from the United States.
The comments come as U-S President Donald Trump called on NATO allies to increase their defence spending.
Mr Abbott has told Sky News, while defence spending has increased in recent years, the government needs to invest more.
