News bulletin of the day

Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne has met with Thai government officials asking them to release the Melbourne-based refugee footballer they detained in November.

Hakeem Al-Araibi was visiting Thailand with his wife when he was arrested by authorities because of an Interpol Red Notice warrant issued by the Bahraini government.

The Bahraini government alleged Mr Al-Araibi vandalized a police station and are requesting that Thai officials send him back to Bahrain for punishment.

Former Socceroo captain Craig Foster says he hopes Ms Payne's plea to let Mr Al-Araibi go, will be successful.
