Refugees who were held in detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru are being paired with more than 300 Australian expats living in the United States.

The Aussie Diaspora Steps Up group is offering assistance, financial support and friendship to refugees transferred to the country under the US-Australia refugee deal.

Former Nauru detainee Mohammad Ayes told SBS News he is grateful for their help.
