Border security is set to be one of the major topics when parliament resumes today.
A bill will be introduced by Independent MP Dr Kerryn Phelps which would allow asylum seekers to be flown from offshore processing to Australia for medical treatment if deemed necessary by doctors on the island and an independent panel.
However, the federal government says that could allow asylum seekers to abuse the system in order to reach Australia.
Labor supports the bill, and leader Bill Shorten says he is open to finding what he calls a "middle ground" with the coalition on the issue.
