The Indian mining giant Adani has announced it will begin building the controversial Carmichael coalmine in Queensland's Galilee Basin next year.
The company says the mine will be self-financed and will be smaller due to legal and environmental disputes.
Adani chief executive Lucas Downer says the mine will open up more job and business opportunities for the people of North and Central Queensland.
But Australian Youth Climate Coalition spokeswoman Kelly Albion says the news couldn't come at a more inappropriate time.
