A Syrian man has reportedly been taken from immigration detention on Nauru to Cambodia. SBS understands the man, deemed a refugee, was taken to Cambodia last Friday. The man has told SBS Radio's Arabic24 he was given notice on Thursday that he would be moved. We spoke to him from Cambodia where he is been supported by the IOM under the agreement between Australia and Cambodia. He claims he was offered $10,000 to go to Cambodia, with another $6,000 to be paid over the first year. The man had spent two-and-a-half years in the camp, and his brother remains there in Nauru.
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection in an email said to SBS Arabic 24:
The Governments of Australia and Cambodia remain committed to the agreement which allows refugees in Nauru to settle in Cambodia.
The Department does not comment on individual cases.
Australia and Cambodia are committed to an arrangement that provides refugees with the support they need to integrate into the Cambodian community and build new lives.
