A young Syrian refugee joined the police cadets in Western Australia just two years after he fled war in Syria.

Obaida Mahrous (17) and his family escaped from his home country to Jordan before arriving to Australia as refugees in 2017.

The family settled in Perth in Western Australia where Obaida undertook English language lessons, transitioned into mainstream schooling and hoping to finish Year 11 this year.

With the help of the Mirrabooka-based Edmund Rice Centre WA’s developing community leaders initiative, he was accepted into Mirrabooka Police Station's work experience program.

He said he was very much impressed by how police treated people in Australia and decide that this is what he wants to do in the future.

He said he values the opportunity highly and he is looking forward to be able to help the community as a police officer.
