On Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 March, the Australian Iraqi community will come together for the Iraqi Cultural Festival Song of Peace from Australia to Mesopotamia at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to celebrate, engage and showcase their rich heritage and cultural diversity. There will be a range of talks, music, dance, food, films and live performances on offer over the two days. The purpose of the two day festival is to open a dialogue and discuss the diversity and resilience of Iraqi culture and how Iraqis, in the diaspora, can respond to current challenges, says Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre Director Kiersten Fishburn. I hope that people come away with feeling culturally enriched by this significant event. One of the highlights of the festival will be the talk by international guest and keynote speaker Dr Andrea Teti, Director of Centre for Global Security and Governance in Aberdeen University. His main research interests and publications focus on European and US democracy-promotion policies in the Middle East, Egyptian politics, Islamist movements, civil society and labour movements. He will discuss and unveil what ordinary Iraqis on the ground in Iraq really feel about the political and social transformation taking place in their ravaged country.
