Is Australia erasing its memory?

AAP

There are things that can never be erased from the memory! The childhood home and the grandparents place are some of them.

In Australia, however, theres no such place as grandpas or grandmas old home. Most of the times, such places are either sold so the elderly dwellers can move to a nursing home or end up in Estate sales or auctions.Even the childhood places of Prime Ministers are sold, knocked down to allow for new buildings or transferred to businesses. For instance, the home of John Howard is now a KFC outlet while the house of Bob Hawke is being used by Centerlink. Paul Keatings place disappeared!Although some homes in Australia are preserved under the Heritage clause of the law, theres hardly a place in the big cities that has been inherited from generation to generation in the same family. This goes against the trends and traditions in the countries of origin of the Arabic communities. Is Australia erasing its memory? Are you dwelling on nostalgia to the warmth and beauty of your childhood home? How about your grandparents home? Is it still there? When was the last time you visited it? How was your feeling when you stepped in?More in this talkback on Good Morning Australia at SBS Arabic 24.
