The government said their economic plan is working and opposition said there is still a long way to go.

The unemployment rate for August has remained steady at 5.3 per cent for the second month in a row.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the number of people with jobs grew by 44,000, more than double what economists predicted.

The participation rate increased slightly to 65.7 per cent, from 65.6 per cent in July. Jobs Minister Kelly O'Dwyer says the data shows the Government's economic plan is working.

Opposition employment spokesman Brendan O'Connor says there is still a long way to go.
