Karem Mahmoud (1922 - 1995) was a popular Egyptian singer and actor. He was also widely known in the Arab world. Karem Mahmoud was born in the city of Damanhour , northern Egypt , not far from Alexandria. Since childhood, he developed his talent for singing Arabic poetry with precise pronunciation and phonetic discipline. In his youth, he mastered the difficult songs of Sayed Darwish and Mohammad Abdelwahab. In 1938 Karem Mahmoud was admitted to the Institute of Arabic Music in Cairo, where he was tutored by some of the greats of Egyptian music. He went on to become a star both as a singer and as an actor.
