Labor candidate for Melbourne

Sophie Ismail is a lawyer with experience in employment, education, discrimination, multilateral trade negotiations and human rights. Sophie migrated to Australia with her family in 1988 and is the oldest of four children from a multicultural family. Sophie graduated from the University of Queensland with a Law/Arts degree and worked as a graduate clerk at Phillips Fox Lawyers in Insurance Risk Management and Public Liability. After realising she was on the wrong side of the mediation table, she took a position at the Independent Education Union as an Industrial Officer representing education employees in workers compensation, underpayment and discrimination cases. Sophie spent two years in Canberra working on the Governments Human Rights Framework and international employment policy, during which time she represented the Australian Government in trade negotiations and at the International Labour Organisation. Sophie moved to Victoria in 2009. She led the enterprise bargaining negotiations for education employees in the independent schools sector for the Victorian Independent Education Union, and later worked as a Senior Associate at Holding Redlich representing unions and employees in sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination and other employment litigation. She currently works in the Victorian Department of Education and Trainings Legal Division providing advice to schools on discrimination, human rights and employment law. Sophie is a proud feminist and believes that gender equality must be a core aspect of Labor's commitment to economic and social justice.
