Women in Australia enjoy equal rights with men as guaranteed by the Constitution and the law. This law or legislation came as a result of decades of cultural development that distinguished the Australian society. These laws may seem strange and inappropriate to many newly arrived people who came from different cultures from Australia
In an effort to familiarize the newly arrived with women's rights in Australia, the Multicultural Center for Women's Health organizes information sessions for the Arabic-speaking communities, especially newly arrived communities from Iraq and Syria
To learn about this program, we are talking at the next meeting with Ms. May Elkass Eliass, health educator at the center. May pointed out that different customs and lack of knowledge of the laws may push immigrant families to suppress women and restrict their freedoms in the belief that this is the only way to protect
