Matching migrant skills with jobs ‘would give us a $6bn boost’

Better matching the skills of qualified migrants to suitable jobs could increase their productivity and deliver a multi-billion-dollar boost to the economy.


A new report has assessed the contribution that 6.2 million foreign-born workers make to Australia’s social and economic development.

It recommends that migrants be helped to find a job at a similar skill level to the one they held in their home country.

The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre says migrants in Australia, particularly from non-English speaking backgrounds, could be assisted by closely matching their educational qualifications and skills to jobs. At present, 35 per cent of migrants from a non-English speaking background are over-qualified relative to the job they hold.
