Russia says an agreement brokered to establish de-escalation zones in Syria is now in effect as part of efforts to halt fighting in the country's civil war. The deal, signed by Russia, Turkey and Iran as guarantors, is designed to bring a halt to fighting in the rebel held Idlib province, the central Homs region, some suburbs in the capital, Damascus, and in Southern Syria. But there have been reports of gunfire and shelling in some rebel controlled areas. Russia says the agreement will remain in place for six months. The initiative is also being supported by the United Nations special envoy for Syria, Steffan di Mistura.
