Australian pensioners over the age of 80 who live overseas may soon need to prove they're alive every two years.
Draft legislation is on its way to the senate after passing through the lower house on Monday.
The federal government expects the proposal to save about $220 million over the forward estimates.
Pensioners would have 13 weeks to return a "proof of life" certificate or otherwise have their payments suspended.
The government says the proposal brings Australia into line with Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy.
