Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has introduced a bill to parliament [[thurs]] which would temporarily ban any citizen suspected of terrorism from returning to Australia.

Based on the United Kingdom's Temporary Exclusion Order scheme, the legislation would stop foreign fighters from entering Australia for two years.

Mr Dutton says 230 Australians have travelled to Syria or Iraq to join overseas conflict, with about 80 still active in zones.

He says the bill addresses the significant risks Australia faces from returning foreign fighters.
