Up to eight youths have been stabbed at a juvenile justice centre on the New South Wales Central Coast, which has been locked down after inmates sparked a riot.

The riot reportedly took place late on Sunday night [[22/7]] at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre at Kariong, when a group of youths allegedly used chainsaws to cut open all the cell doors.

Police have confirmed officers are at the scene after a breakout about 8-45 p-m on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said police "have established a perimeter and are monitoring the (ongoing) situation".

Reports say paramedics locked themselves in a secure area to treat the injured, while several inmates climbed onto the roof.
