Controversial new laws allowing Tasmanians to choose whether gender is listed on their birth certificate have come into effect.

The laws, which passed parliament in April, make Tasmania the nation's first jurisdiction in which listing gender on a birth certificate is optional.

They also remove the requirement for transgender people to have sexual reassignment surgery in order to have a new gender legally recognised.

Tasmanian Greens leader Cassy O'Connor says the state should be proud it's leading the nation.
