Morning News: Terminally-ill Victorians able to ask their doctor to help them end their lives from today

A new survey has revealed that negative attitudes towards refugees are growing in Australia.


Terminally-ill Victorians can now legally ask their doctor for lethal drugs under the nation's only euthanasia laws. 

The state's voluntary assisted dying scheme comes into effect from today.

The Victorian Government estimates up to 150 patients will access voluntary assisted dying each year, if they have an incurable disease and death is expected soon. 

Under the patient-driven model, adults who are suffering and are likely to die within six months, can request help from doctors to end their lives. 

Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos says the government is working to ensure all members of the community are informed about the process.
