 Opposition foreign-affairs spokeswoman Penny Wong says Labor will prioritise not having detention as an indefinite punishment.

 Ms Wong's comments come after Liberal backbenchers urged Prime Minister Scott Morrison to get more than 80 children and their parents off Nauru.

 The Prime Minister has said his Cabinet is in discussion to get the children off Nauru for medical attention.

 Senator Wong has told the ABC the Coalition has failed to provide resettlement for asylum seekers.
