Federal Communications Minister, Mitch Fifield says significant media reforms, passed in the senate on Thursday, will not affect media diversity.


Billed as a means to compete with online giants such as Netflix and Google, the reforms will allow media companies to own a television station, newspaper and radio station in the same market. It will also allow networks to extend their reach beyond the previously allowed 75 per cent of the population.

The loosening of ownership restrictions were passed 31-27, after the Liberal government won support for the reforms from independent politicians.

Speaking with the ABC, Mr Fifield says the changes will assist Australian media companies in supporting themselves in today's media environment.
