Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison says proposed religious exemptions to same-sex marriage laws should not be outlined before the postal vote on the subject.

Former Prime Minister John Howard, who is campaigning for a no vote in the poll, says it would not only be good, but quite necessary to specify the provisions surrounding religious freedoms before the vote. But Mr Morrison has told the A-B-C that simply isn't how the poll works, and details such as religious exemptions are for the parliament to decide if the yes vote wins the plebiscite.
