Arabic is the fifth most spoken native language in the world, with about 230 million people speaking it as their first language. Australia has a sizeable Arabic-speaking community.

The Arabic Studies program of the Asia Institute at the University of Melbourne offers Arabic in a variety of ways and options.

Opening the Door into the Arab World is an event held by the Asia Institute since 2014. It offers prospective students information about the benefits of studying Arabic in Australia.

During the event in 2017 we spoke to Dr Dr Abdul-Samad Abdullah, Arabic Studies (Convenor) about the history of the program, the current teaching curriculum and the benefits of studying Arabic for Australian students.
