With the support of The Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR), Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation at Deakin University is organising an international symposium exploring the critical role of local governance and decentralisation for countries undergoing transition to democracy. Institute Director Professor Fethi Mansouri tells us more. For more information: http://www.deakin.edu.au/alfred-deakin-institute/events

Drawing upon insights from leading civil society activists as well as democratic transition and reformist decentralisation, experts on democratic transition and decentralisation will examine post-Arab spring Tunisia and its ongoing progress towards democratisation and political reform.

The symposium will bring together academic, local democracy and transitional justice experts from Australia as well as representatives of major civil society organisations from both Tunisia and Indonesia including Australias pioneering Australia-Indonesia Electoral Support Program (AIESP). Delegates will share expertise and experience that will enhance Tunisias capacity for successful democratic consolidation at all levels including local governance.
