The latest Rental Affordability Index has found that renting is unaffordable for many Australians, and more so in city areas with more employment.


Sydney remains the least affordable city in Australia, followed by Hobart.

Singles are paying up to 97 per cent of their income for a new lease in Sydney.

Speaking on the ABC, Ellen Witte, who is from the group* who developed Rental Affordability Index, says students, pensioners and working families with children are being hit the hardest.
