Police have no suspects or motives as the nationwide scare over strawberries being contaminated by needles threatens trade.

Strict export rules have been introduced as a result of Australia's strawberry contamination scare.

Exporters have been told they must prove their fruit has been cleared through a metal detector or x-ray machine before the federal Department of Agriculture issues a permit.

It comes as authorities report apples and bananas have also been found with needles in them.

Police are still looking for suspects and motives for the spate of crimes.

Danny Doherty, of New South Wales Police, says he doesn't know why the contamination is happening, but says the perpetrator could face a long jail sentence.
