Professor Michelle Simmons has been named the 2018 Australian of the Year.

A pioneering physicist from the University of New South Wales, Professor Simmons has brought Australia to the front of what she calls "the space race of the computing era".

The 50 year old, who was born in the United Kingdom, has also worked hard to support women in science since her arrival in Australia nearly two decades ago.

Professor Simmons says she's honoured to win the award.
