Music played an important role in both reflecting and energizing the Egyptian people in January 2011. Musicians and alternative bands started to address political and social issues more explicitly than before. Radio and Television rarely recognized such overt activism in music before the Egyptian revolution, but now artists who had been locked into Cairo's underground music scene are edging their way into the spotlight . Social media and new technologies mean also better access to this music.
