The Australian Federal Government made a decision on Friday to suspend the shipment of live sheep to a Qatari abattoir in the wake of allegations of animal abuse by animal activist group, Animals Australia.

The evidence provided by the group seems heavily suggestive of a breach of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) which the abattoir was signatory of.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says he is open to a ban on live exports during the northern hemisphere summer.

Vet Michael McCarthy is leading a review into the trade of sheep to the Middle East in hottest months of the year after shocking footage emerged of animals dying in cruel conditions in 2017.

Mr Littleproud says if the audit finds live exports are unsustainable in summer, he will act to ban it.

Former Liberal minister Sussan Ley will next month (May) introduce a private member's bill to ban live exports.

But not all ministers are on board, with Nationals leader and Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack saying he doesn't believe live exports should be banned.

Federal Trade minister Steve Ciobo has backed that sentiment and says there is a global demand for live exports.

President of the Australia Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Roland Jabbour, OAM said that in supporting the government’s initiatives, it is important that we strike a balance between ensuring the highest of animal welfare standards are upheld whilst also supporting Australian farmers, the trade and the importer.

To learn more about the live animal export industry to Qatar and its value, and the impact of the Government’s decision, we spoke to Mr Jabbour.
