A man has knocked a gun out of a woman's hand during an attempted armed robbery at a Melbourne convenience store.
Police allege the woman entered the Albert Park store on Saturday afternoon wearing a motorcycle helmet and carrying a black imitation handgun, and threatened a shop attendant to hand over cash from the till.
A 57-year-old customer tackled the woman, knocking the firearm for her hand and restrained her until police arrived and arrested her.
In this podcast Sergeant Maka Sukkar from Victoria Police explains what a 'citizen's arrest' is and what are the community benefits and the risks associated with it.
