A man is behind bars after punching several women and men as he walked along an eastern Sydney street in what police say were all racially motivated attacks.

It took a group of workmen to hold down the 25-year-old man until police arrived following the alleged attacks along Randwick's Avoca Street about 9.45pm on Thursday.

Police allege the man targeted people of Asian background.

Nearly all of the victims were punched in the face or kicked, including a 70-year-old man who has suffered facial injuries, police said.

The 25-year-old has been charged with three counts of reckless grievous bodily harm and four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on Friday.
