You may hear Chiese people shout "jia you (加油)" during sports matches to express encouragement and support.

“jia you” is very confusing for English translation.

It may mean "Cheer up" for a depressed person, "good luck" for an unfortunate buddy or "get well soon" for your sick friend.

But what does it exactly mean and how to translate it into English?

Don't bother, you can simply translate "加油" into "add oil", according to the Oxford Dictionary.

Just like "long time no see", "add oil" is another Chinglish phrase that recognized by the famous dictionary.
