For Chinese learners, everyday expressions like “还可以” (hái kěyǐ), “还行” (hái xíng), and “看情况” (kàn qíngkuàng) can be surprisingly difficult to understand. For many Chinese learners, expressions like “还可以” (hái kě yǐ) or “还行” (hái xíng) may sound like positive feedback. But in everyday Chinese conversations, their meanings are often much more complicated.
Depending on the context, “还可以” could mean pretty good - or simply “not too bad”.
It is not always easy to tell whether someone is genuinely impressed or just being polite.
Chinese has many similar expressions, such as “一般” (yì bān), “凑合” (còu he), and “马马虎虎” (mǎ mǎ hū hū). While they may all be translated into English as “okay” or “just alright,” each carries a different tone and meaning in real-life conversations.
In this episode of Simple Mandarin, we speak with Ben Webb, a Chinese teacher in Australia with years of experience teaching the language, to explore the hidden meanings behind Chinese expressions of evaluation - and how language reflects ideas about politeness, relationships and social harmony.
