Collins 英語辭典將「fake news」列為 2017 年年度字詞（Word of the Year）；而出版社亦同時公佈，新版字典將納入新詞「fidget spinner（指尖陀螺）」。
Collins 英語辭典的出版社表示，「fake news（假新聞）」在 2017 年的使用率比去年上升了 365%，故此將字詞選為 2017 年年都字詞。
根據 Collins 的定義，「fake news」解作「以新聞報道的模式傳播虛構、危言聳聽的消息」。
英文釋義：「False, often sensational, information disseminated under the guise of news reporting.」
Collins 在出版辭典再版的時候，將會將「fake news」納入字典當中。
此外，字典亦會加入其他與近年政治有關的字詞，包括「antifa」（「anti-fascist」的縮寫）、「echo chamber」、「cuffing season」及「unicorn」等。
另外，「gig economy」亦將被納入字典中，形容一個包含很多臨時工或自由職業者的經濟模式。
而隨著社交平台「Instagram」興起，「insta」亦將被納入字典。
