COVID-19 update: South-East Queensland out of lockdown, but one “unexpected” case sets Cairns into a lockdown

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk provides a COVID-19 update in Brisbane, Sunday, August 8, 2021 Source: AAP/Danny Casey

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 8 August 2021.

  • Queensland records nine new local COVID-19 cases
  • Cairns and Yarrabah to enter into a three-day lockdown from 4pm today
  • 262 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases in NSW, one death
  • Victoria reports 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases

Queensland

Queensland has reported nine new locally acquired cases. Seven are linked to the Indooroopilly cluster, one on the Gold Coast and one new case in Cairns.

The lockdown in South-East Queensland will end as planned at 4pm today, but some restrictions will remain in place for the next two weeks, including mandatory mask use.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the case in Cairns is very concerning as the person works as a taxi driver and has been infectious in the community for 10 days.

As a result, Cairns Regional Council and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council will enter into a three-day lockdown from 4pm this afternoon.

New South Wales

NSW has recorded 262 new locally acquired coronavirus cases and one woman aged in her 80s has died.

At least 72 of those new cases were in the community while infectious.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says 12 suburbs in the City of Penrith LGA would be listed as areas of concern and will have additional restrictions from 5pm on Sunday.

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases, all linked to the current outbreak. None of them were in quarantine during their infectious period.

Victorians aged 18 to 39 will be able to access the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine at selected mass vaccination centres from Monday.

Australia’s first drive-through vaccination hub will be opening in Victoria at a former Bunnings Warehouse in Melton from Monday.
