“This exhibition is about celebrating our culture, our history and our stories through the medium of fashion.” – Piinpi curator, Shonae Hobson.

Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion exhibition recently opened its doors to the public at Bendigo art Gallery last week (31 OCT 20 - 17 JAN 21) and is described as the first major survey of contemporary Indigenous Australian fashion to be undertaken in this country.

Piinpi curator Shonae Hobson brought together a selection of garments and textiles by First Nations designers and artists from around Australia in an effort to share their stories through beautifully crafted fabrics and wearable art.

“We’ve got about 70 designers and artists from Cape York to East Arnhem land to metropolitan regions of Sydney and Melbourne.”

Piinpi, is an Indigenous word commonly used across regions of East Coast Cape York Peninsula, refers to Indigenous ‘seasonal changes’ and the regeneration of Country.

“It is a about country, and its about its rich ancestral knowledge and story-telling through fashion.”
