COVID-19 update: Victoria marks new national daily case record

This is your update on the Coronavirus in Australia for 8 October 2021.


  • Victoria reintroduces communities into border bubble
  • NSW urges everyone to maintain COVID-safe behaviour

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 1,838 new locally acquired cases and five deaths. 

Several local government areas have been added to the border bubble including Benalla, Greater Bendigo, Buloke Shire, Loddon, Yarriambiack, Hay, Edward River, Lockhart, Murrumbidgee, Wagga Wagga. 

Residents who have spent the past 14 days within the bubble can enter and leave Victoria without the permit.

New South Wales  

NSW has recorded 646 new locally acquired cases and 11 deaths, bringing the total of COVID-related deaths in the current outbreak to 414. 

Virus fragments have been detected in sewage samples in Wee Waa in the Hunter New England region and Quirindi and Brewarrina in western NSW. 

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant urges everyone to continue wearing masks, keep checking in, maintain social distance, and, most importantly, isolate and get tested if COVID-19 symptoms are suspected.

Australian Capital Territory

The territory has recorded 40 locally acquired cases. 

There are currently 16 COVID patients in hospital, including six in intensive care and five requiring ventilation.

Last 24 hours around Australia

  • Local government areas of Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Townsville (including Magnetic Island), and Palm Island will re-join the rest of Queensland on Stage 3 restrictions from 4pm today, Friday 8 October. 
  • South Australia’s southeast returns to the same level of restrictions as the rest of the state, which is currently under Level 1 restrictions with some additional measures.
